Admissions at a Glance
Ready to take the next step toward the Physician Assistant Studies Hybrid Program (PAS-Hybrid) at the University of Pittsburgh? We strongly encourage all prospective students to schedule a one-on-one application walkthrough with an enrollment advisor to discuss program prerequisites, admission criteria, and deadlines.
Individuals from Health Professions Shortage Areas, Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, and other minoritized communities are encouraged to apply. Academic Prerequisites
All PA school admission requirements must be completed by October 1, 2024, to start classes in the Spring 2025 term of the PAS-Hybrid program. Applicants who do not complete prerequisite coursework by the October 1 deadline will not be considered for the program.
Degree and GPA Requirements
To be a qualified applicant, you must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with the following GPA requirements:
- –Overall GPA of 3.0 (based on 4.0) in all undergraduate- and college-level coursework
- –Minimum GPA of 3.0 (based on 4.0) in the prerequisite science courses designated with an asterisk (*)
Exceptions may be made (but are not guaranteed) for candidates who present compelling evidence of success in graduate coursework. This means that if you have an overall GPA of < 3.0, your application may still be reviewed/considered by our team if you have completed an entire master’s or doctorate-level program. Completion of graduate-level courses without a diploma from said programs will not be considered, nor will graduate-level certificate programs.
Coursework Prerequisites
To be eligible for the PAS-Hybrid program, applicants must have completed the following coursework:
- -Anatomy with lab and Physiology* (This requirement may be met by taking either one semester of Anatomy with lab and one semester of Physiology or two semesters of Anatomy with lab and Physiology combined.)
- -Biology with lab designed for science majors, two semesters*
- -English Composition/writing, two semesters
- -Microbiology with lab, one semester*
- -Chemistry with lab designed for science majors, two semesters*
- -Psychology, one semester
- -Statistics, one semester
- -Medical Terminology, one semester for at least 1 college credit
There is no expiration date for prerequisite courses.
For questions about whether your specific courses satisfy our prerequisite requirements, please review this detailed prerequisite rubric. If you still have questions after reviewing the prerequisite rubric, please email an enrollment advisor for additional information. Advanced placement, defined as a waiver of required coursework included in the PA curriculum for applicants to the program and/or a waiver of required coursework included in the PA curriculum for currently enrolled students in the program, which results in the student advancing in the curriculum without completing required curricular components at the University of Pittsburgh, is not an option in this program.
Testing Requirements
Please note that the GRE General Test is not required for admission to the program.
How to Apply
To apply to the Physician Assistant Studies Hybrid Program, you must complete and submit the following:
Online Application
Upload all application materials through the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA)
Patient Care Experience
A minimum of 500 hours of direct, “hands-on,” patient care experience is required by the application deadline. Eligible experiences include work as an RN, EMT, paramedic, medical assistant, physical therapy or occupational therapy assistant. Technical Standards Verification
Students admitted to the program must review the Technical Standards for admission and graduation, and submit a signed form at the time of matriculation verifying satisfactory performance of the essential skills.
Personal Statements
Students must provide two personal statements in the Centralized Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA). Your first essay should be a personal statement focusing on why you want to become a PA. The second essay should reflect the mission of the PA Studies program and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required including one from a character reference, PCE supervisor, and instructor. Please see examples of who can write these letters and content below:

Additional Information
Admitted students must complete a background check.
Acceptance into and successful completion of the University of Pittsburgh Physician Assistant Studies program does not imply or guarantee National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) Certification or that the student will be able to obtain state licensure upon graduation.
Citizenship Requirements
Given the nature of the online format for the didactic year, all applicants and matriculants need to identify as U.S. citizens, have documentation of permanent residency, or have dual citizenship status. While an F-1 Academic Student Visa is permissible for in-person courses, this Visa only deems such students eligible for one online course per term, hence excluding participation in this hybrid format. International students are encouraged to pursue the University of Pittsburgh on-campus Physician Assistant program, as an Academic Student Visa can be honored with on-campus training.
Admissions Process Insights
Our admissions process operates on a rolling basis. Seats are available when CASPA opens in April. Applications are reviewed in the order they’re received, undergoing a ‘verification’ step by WebAdmit/CASPA, which can take several weeks. Please note, our faculty cannot begin reviewing applications until verification is complete. Following verification and faculty scoring, applicants may receive interview offers as early as June (specific dates to be updated soon). Program seats may be offered to interviewees two weeks after interviews. Applying later in the cycle means fewer program seats might be available.
For transparency, we’ll regularly update this page with our current status to include:
1. Actively reviewing applications and conducting interviews to fill program seats.
2. Interview seats are full, but interviews are ongoing (applying at this stage means joining a pre-interview waitlist).
3. Program seats are full (applying now means joining a pre-interview waitlist).
While applications are welcome until the cycle closes on October 1, 2024, keep in mind that later applications might have reduced chances due to verification and seat availability.

Upcoming Deadlines
The Physician Assistant Studies Hybrid Program offers one program start per year. Qualified applicants can apply to the spring cohort of the program each year.
Please note that all prerequisite coursework must be completed by the deadline indicated to be considered for the PAS-Hybrid program.
Only application materials submitted through the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
Admissions Decision Process
The application and admissions processes for the Physician Assistant Studies Hybrid Program does not favor specific groups or individuals based on their personal or social identities.
Student admissions decisions are made in accordance with these practices:
Screening of Applications: Upon receipt of a verified application from the CASPA service, the Director of Admissions Tara McSwigan and the rest of the Admissions Committee (which includes the program director and all full-time faculty), along with program staff, award points for certain applicant criteria and characteristics, and the total points are used to decide who is invited to interview for a seat in the program. These criteria and characteristics include:
- Health care experience and level of experience – Higher scores are awarded for longer service and at higher levels of patient care
- Diploma and degree – While a bachelor’s degree is required, a graduate degree is scored higher
- Grade Point Averages (GPAs) – Higher undergraduate and specific prerequisite science GPAs receive higher scores
- Scoring of personal statements – Higher scores are awarded based on the strength of evidence of desire to be a PA, understanding of the role of a PA, demonstration of understanding of the program mission, evidence of how one’s background, qualifications, and/or identities match and/or support the mission, language and writing skills, and editorial care
- Letters of Reference – Scores are compiled from the quality of the letter and score provided by the recommender in CASPA
Interview: Interviews for seats in our program are performed and scored by the program director, faculty, and practicing PAs. They include the following parts and scoring:
- Essay – Higher scores are awarded based on apparent appreciation for the state of the PA profession, passion for pursuing PA school to positively impact the profession, language and writing skills, and editorial care
- Individual interview – Higher scores are awarded based on the strength of demonstration of the following qualities: adaptability/stress management, conflict resolution, and technical and professional knowledge/ability to learn
- Group interview – Higher scores are awarded based on the strength of demonstration of the following qualities: active listening, conflict management, probing the group to maximize performance, leadership skills, clarification of group responses, encouraging and harmonizing with fellow group members, articulation, drawing others into the conversation, offering ideas, and summarizing
Total Scoring and Final Review by Admissions Committee: After completion of the above, the committee reviews candidate scores, reviewer comments, and application information to decide who is accepted, waitlisted, and denied admission.
Pitt Guaranteed Admissions Programs
The PAS Hybrid Program offers two different guaranteed admissions programs.
For Incoming First-Year Students
High school students seeking admission to the University of Pittsburgh for first-year entry should visit and apply through the University’s Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Incoming first-years have the opportunity to qualify for a number of our “Pitt Guaranteed Admissions Programs” which guarantee students admission into an SHRS graduate or professional program, including the PAS Hybrid Program, providing they meet all criteria. The first step in qualifying for these guarantees is to identify them in your first-year application to the University. To complete the evaluation of your candidacy for the Physician Assistant Studies Guarantee, applicants will be required to submit the following:
-Three letters of recommendation
-A personal statement addressing the following prompt: The mission of the Physician Assistant Studies Program is to develop highly qualified Physician Assistants who will serve as collaborative leaders in patient care, professional service and advocacy for all populations. How do your background, qualifications, and/or identities match and/or support the mission of the PA Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh?
Your response should be no more than 500 words.
Materials should be submitted together via one email to PittPA@shrs.pitt.edu, or separately with the subject line “GAP Application – (First Name) (Last Name)” by March 1. Based on a review of your essay and recommendations, the PAS committee will notify you directly, in April, if you are selected for the guarantee.
To maintain a guarantee if you are selected, you must:
- -Achieve a 3.40 or better science prerequisite and overall grade point average (GPA) while enrolled in an undergraduate program at Pitt
- -Complete all admission requirements for the PAS Hybrid Program,
- -Meet with a PAS Hybrid faculty or staff member at least once per year providing proof of GPA and courses taken, and
- -Complete your undergraduate degree at Pitt in four years.
Apply to the program through CASPA by October 1. Students granted a PAS Guarantee will have the option of enrolling in our on-campus or PAS Hybrid (MS) program. You will make your selection upon application to the graduate program.

For Sophomores Applying to the Nutrition Science Program
The Physician Assistant Studies (MS) hybrid and on-campus programs will offer guaranteed admission to select Nutrition Science (BS) students beginning with those admitted to the BS program for fall 2024. Consideration for the Physician Assistant Studies (PAS) Guarantee is a multi-step process. Qualified students will be asked by the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences to submit supplemental information in support of their candidacy.
To be considered for the Guarantee, Nutrition Science (BS) applicants must:
- -Apply to the Nutrition Science (BS) upper-division program by March 1. Students are encouraged to apply early.
- -Hold a 3.60 or better science prerequisite and overall grade point average (GPA) at the time of application.
- -Eligible students will be invited to submit supplemental application materials, including recommendation letters and personal statements, to the PA program by April 1. The supplemental information will be reviewed by the PAS selection committee.
Students selected for the guarantee based on their submissions will be notified by the PAS program. Students offered the guarantee must:
- -Achieve a 3.60 or better science prerequisite and overall grade point average (GPA) while enrolled in the Nutrition Science (BS) program,
- -Complete all admission requirements for the PAS program,
- -Meet with a PAS faculty or staff member at least once per year providing proof of GPA and courses taken,
- -Complete your Nutrition Science degree at Pitt in two years, and
- -Apply to the program through CASPA by October 1 following graduation from the Nutrition Science (BS) program. You must apply to the format of the program (hybrid or on-campus) to which you were Guaranteed admission.
PAS reserves the right to limit the number of students offered Guaranteed Admission each year. Only admitted Nutrition Science (BS) students can be considered for this guarantee.

Accreditation
The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the University of Pittsburgh Physician Assistant Studies Hybrid Program sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh. Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students.
Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.
